The August 15, 2018 game between the Yankees and Royals in New York featured contributions from two players destined for Cooperstown. For the Yankees, Derek Jeter was consistent. In the bottom of the third inning, he led off the inning with a ground ball single to left field. Unfortunately, the subsequent batters could not turn the leadoff single into a run. In the fifth inning, with Jose Molina on second base, The Captain took matters into his own hands and hit a line drive single to center field, allowing Jose Molina to score the first Yankees run. It was now a 3-1 ball game in favor of the Royals. The Yankees did add two runs to tie the game in the seventh inning, with Jeter scoring the tying run after reaching base with a walk. Still tied at 3-3, Mariano Rivera came into the game to try to keep the Royals from scoring any runs. But after allowing two hits, to put runners on the corners with one out, Rivera unleashed a wild pitch that got by catcher Jose Molina, allowing Esteban German to score the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, Derek Jeter stepped into the batter’s box. He smacked another hit to right field, for a single, his third hit of the game. Bobby Abreu walked, and Alex Rodriguez hit another single to load the bases. Jason Giambi had a chance to put the win the game but popped a 90.6 MPH fastball to center field for the final out, and the Royals won 4-3. This game was the fifth and final loss by Mariano Rivera this season. In the nineteen years that he played, Rivera only had five or more losses in a season three times. And of the 2747 regular season games that Derek Jeter played, he only had 288 games with three hits or more. This ball is game used from the August 15th game between the Yankees and Royals but is not attributed to a specific play.
