Coming into the May 28, 2018, Memorial Day game in Detroit, Albert Pujols was tied with Ty Cobb with 1944 career RBIs. The remained tied entering the top of the eighth inning as the Angles had not been able to put together an offense to reply to Detroit’s 7-0 lead. With one out and Justin Upton on first base, Pujols stepped up to the plate. Buck Farmer threw this ball for three pitches to the designated hitter, the third attempting being a 95.8 MPH fastball. Pujols turned on the pitch and hit a line drive to right field for a double, driving in Justin Upton. With this double, Pujols had career hit 3017 and passed Cobb for sole possession of seventh place on the all-time RBI leader board with 1945. The next batter, Andrelton Simmonds followed up with a double of his own, bringing Pujols home and cutting the Tigers lead to 7-2. But that was all the scoring that the Angels would do in this inning. When the last out was recorded, Detroit won 9-3. This loss reduced the Angels’ record to 29-25, where they trail both Seattle and first-place Houston in the American League West.
