The Miami Marlins traveled to the west coast in July 2017. They played the Giants on July 8 in a game that went down to the last inning. The Marlins held a 4-1 lead going into the sixth inning. This baseball was used to start the inning when Chris O’Grady got Hunter Pence to fly out to center field on the first pitch of the inning. Giants’ catcher Buster Posey then saw this ball for three pitches. On the third offering, Posey blooped a ball just past first baseman Justin Bour for a double, the 208th double of his career. This ball was taken out of the game for the next batter, Brandon Belt who hit a double of his own, scoring Posey to make the score 4-2. A few batters later, Brandon Crawford would drive Belt home to make the score 4-3. The score stayed 4-3 until the top of the ninth inning when the Marlins scored an insurance run on a George Kontos wild pitch. The Giants recovered one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but that was not enough as they lost 5-4, dropping to 34-55 and remaining in last place in the division.
