Rhys Hoskins ended the 2017 season as one of the hottest young players in baseball. On opening day 2018 when the Phillies visited the Braves, Hoskins started early to prove he was the real deal. Cesar Hernandez started the top of the first inning with a single. Carlos Santana followed up by grounding into a force out, leaving himself on first base with one out. Santana took second base on a wild pitch while Nick Williams was at bat before Williams struck out. This brought up Hoskins with two outs. Hoskins hit this baseball, the first pitch he saw down the right field line for an RBI double to give the Phillies an early -0 lead. Hoskins would double again in the eighth inning, but the Phillies did not score any runs in that inning. The Braves trailed 5-0 halfway through the sixth inning, and 5-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning where they scored three runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Nick Markakis hit a three-run home run to give Atlanta a walk-off home run and a 1-0 start to the season. The comeback from being down five runs was the biggest comeback ever for a Braves team on the opening day of a season.
