Paul Goldschmidt led off the bottom of the ninth inning when the Diamondbacks played the division rival Giants on April 18, 2018. This baseball was thrown for the first pitch of the at-bat and Goldschmidt smacked it to centerfield where it fell for a double. The hit lept off his bat at 109.9 MPH and was Goldschmidt’s 1025th career hit. A.J. Pollock took a turn at the plate with Hunter Strickland throwing a new baseball. Pollock hit a double of his own, scoring Goldschmidt and tying the baseball game 2-2. The rest of the Diamondbacks lineup was unsuccessful in their attempts to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. In the top of the tenth inning, San Francisco took a 4-2 lead. Arizona managed to make up one of those runs but ultimately lost 4-3. Even with the loss, the Diamondbacks were able to keep their hold on first place with a 12-5 record.
