Two of the best players of their generation met on opposite sides of the diamond on April 23, 2014, when Bryce Harper and the Nationals hosted Mike Trout and the Angels. In the bottom of the first inning, with runners on first and second, Bryce Harper hit a ball to center field that appeared to be a hit. Mike Trout made a diving play to rob this hit, and instead record the first out of the inning. In the top of the fourth inning, this baseball was used when Bryce Harper batted against Jered Weaver. Harper hit this ball, a 68.5 MPH curve to right field for a single. This ball was taken out of play after the hit. The next batter grounded into a force out when the Angles got the lead runner, Bryce Harper at second base. Washington did have a 1-0 lead when Mike Trout walked in the sixth inning, setting the stage for Albert Pujols to drive him home when he hit a double to Bryce Harper in left field, to tie the game at 1 run a piece. Later in the inning, Pujols scored when Erick Aybar hit a single, again to Bryce Harper. Mike Trout would also drive in a run when he hit a single with Raul Ibanez on second base, to give the Angels a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Washington fought back, scoring on a home run, a three-RBI double, and finally getting the walk-off win when Adam LaRoche hit an RBI single to score Jayson Werth. With the win, the Nationals had a record of 12-10 and were in second place behind the Braves.
