When the Red Sox played the Mariners in Seattle on July 25, 2017, rookie third base prospect Rafael Devers made his Major League debut. After an uneventful first at-bat in the third inning that lasted five pitches, and ended with a pop out to center field, he came to the plate again in the sixth inning for his second plate appearance. This trip at-bat ended with Devers first career walk. Mookie Betts struck out, and Andrew Benintendi walked to put runners on first and second base. This ball was used in the following at-bat when Dustin Pedroia was at the plate. It was a ball in the dirt, a 92.9 sinker for the second pitch of the at-bat. After hitting the ground, this ball was replaced. In the same at-bat, with a 2-2 count, Pedroia hit a double to left field to score Devers and Benintendi, for the first run scored of Devers’ career. Two batters later Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a single to score Pedroia to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead. The Mariners tied the game in the seventh, and the score stayed the same until the thirteenth inning. Sandy Leon drove home Hanley Ramirez to give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead in the top of the thirteenth. However, in the bottom of the inning with two outs, a wild pitch allowed Ben Gamel to tie the game for Seattle, and then Jean Segura hit a walk-off single to give the Mariners a walk-off 6-5 win. This loss dropped the Red Sox to 55-47. This loss combined with a Yankees win on the same date reduced the Red Sox division lead to one game.
