The Houston Astros had lost the first two games of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers when the teams met on September 4, 2016. Jose Altuve led off the third inning with a ground out, to bring up Carlos Correa. Correa hit a Yu Darvish cutter to the shortstop for a single, the 246th hit of his career. Yukieski Gurriel popped up as the next batter for the second out of the inning. Correa advanced into scoring position when he took second base on a wild pitch while Evan Gattis was at bat. But Darvish struck out Gattis to end the inning before the Astros could do any damage. Yu Darvish only lasted four innings, as the Astros were able to chase him after taking a 5-0 lead. The Rangers fought back, but the Astros held them off to win 7-6. The win moved the 72-64 Astros closer to a wild-card berth, but the still trailed the division-leading Rangers by 9.5 games.
