The Houston Astros and the Miami Marlins met on May 16, 2017, in a game between teams with seasons heading in opposite directions. The Astros entered the game with a league-leading 27-12 record, while the Marlins were struggling at the bottom of their division. Tom Koehler started the game on the mound for the Marlins, when Carlos Correa stepped in the bat. With one out and runners on the corners, Correa hit a curveball that ricocheted off second base into left field for a single. Josh Reddick scored from third base for the first run of the game, and Jose Altuve moved over to third base. This baseball was taken out of the game for the next batter, Brian McCann. McCann hit a single to drive home Altuve and to advance Correa to third base. After a Yuki Gurriel flies out, Marwin Gonzalez hit a single to score Correa to give the Astros a 3-0 lead before the Marlins had a chance to bat. Correa would score again in the second inning after reaching on a walk and would hit a single in the sixth inning, but the Marlins kept the Astros off the score board in the sixth. When the last out was recorded, the Astros improved their best record in all of baseball to 28-12.
